NavVis MLX: handheld dynamic scanning made for professionals

NavVis launched the MLX on 10 September 2024, describing it as the first handheld dynamic laser scanner made for professionals. After a month on VirtualSpace jobs the description holds: it has the VLX 3's sensor quality in a form that goes where a wearable frame cannot.

Why a handheld

The VLX 3 is superb on open floors, but stairwells, riser cupboards, crawl spaces and vehicle interiors are awkward with a body-worn unit. The MLX's dual LiDAR and camera head on a handle reaches those spaces and still registers into the same NavVis IVION project.

• Fast set-up: power on, start the app, walk.
• Same deliverables: E57 and LAS clouds, panoramas, and a web viewer.

How we deploy it

Most VirtualSpace as-built projects now run a VLX 3 for the main floors and an MLX for the vertical cores and back-of-house. The client receives one merged cloud and one Matterport tour, with no gap where the wearable could not fit.
