iPhone Duo: the scan companion that finally replaces the iPad

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, with deliveries starting 23 October. It is Apple's first folding iPhone: a 5.4-inch phone closed, a 7.6-inch tablet open, titanium, an A20 chip on a 2 nm process, a vapour chamber and two batteries. It starts at $1,999. VirtualSpace has pre-ordered units for the field team, and here is why we think it becomes the standard Matterport controller.

The iPad problem

The Matterport Capture app has always been happiest on an iPad: a big screen for the floor plan, room labels and scan-point review. But an iPad is one more device to charge, one more thing to carry up a ladder, and unless you bought the cellular model it cannot upload until you find Wi-Fi. Most Spatialists end up juggling a phone for calls, texts and the Spatialist app, and an iPad for capture.

What the Duo changes

• One device. Open it for the capture app and the mini-map, close it and it is the phone in your pocket with the same job open.
• Upload from the road. Cellular on every Duo means a 300-sweep model starts uploading in the car park, not at the office. For our 24-hour turnaround that is often the difference between same-day processing and next-day.
• Surveys and job notes. The Spatialist app's site surveys, photo checklists and client sign-off run on the inner screen without squinting, then the phone goes back in a pocket.
• Battery and heat. The dual-battery design is rated for all-day use and the vapour chamber keeps the A20 from throttling during long capture sessions, which is where older iPhones and even iPads slowed down on hot sites.

About LiDAR

The Duo does not have a LiDAR scanner; that stays a Pro-line feature on the iPhone 18 Pro. For a Matterport controller it does not matter. The depth data comes from the Pro3's own LiDAR, and the phone only drives the camera and shows the model. If you use an iPhone as a capture device itself, or for quick room scans in a floor-plan app, the 18 Pro remains the right pick. For controlling a Pro3, NavVis or FARO workflow, the Duo's screen and battery win.

Our recommendation

Spatialists buying one device this year should choose the Duo. Anyone keeping an iPad for capture and only replacing a phone is better served by the iPhone 18 Pro.
