FARO Focus Core: a simpler entry to survey-grade scanning

FARO released the Focus Core laser scanner on 18 October 2022 as the entry point to its Focus range. It keeps the Premium's 1 mm-class ranging and 360° imaging but caps range at 70 m and scan speed at about 500,000 points per second.

Why it matters

Survey-grade scanning used to start at a price that only surveyors and large contractors could justify. The Core changes that for firms doing interior as-builts, tenant fit-outs and MEP verification, where 70 m of range is more than enough and speed is rarely the bottleneck.

• Accuracy: ±1 mm ranging error, comparable to the Premium at typical interior distances.
• Range: 70 m, suitable for floors, plant rooms and most building exteriors.
• Workflow: the same FARO Stream and Sphere pipeline as the Premium, so registered clouds drop straight into Revit or ReCap.

How we use it

On VirtualSpace projects the Focus Core is the tripod scanner for Spatial As-Built deliverables under 50,000 sq ft. Larger campuses, long corridors and exterior facades still go to the Focus Premium or a mobile scanner. The Matterport tour remains the visual layer; the Focus cloud is what the modelling team measures from.
