CoStar completes its acquisition of Matterport: what it means for your digital twins
CoStar Group completed its acquisition of Matterport on 28 February 2025 in a deal valued at about $1.6 billion. Matterport now sits inside the company behind Homes.com, Apartments.com and LoopNet.
What stays the same
- Existing tours, links and embeds keep working. Nothing in the close changed the platform or the viewer.
- The Pro3 and Pro2 cameras, the capture app and the API continue as before.
- VirtualSpace remains an independent capture network; our Spatialists deliver Matterport tours alongside NavVis, FARO and Leica work.
What is likely to change
CoStar's stated goal is to put 3D digital twins and AI-generated property intelligence in front of the buyers and tenants on its marketplaces. Expect tighter listing integrations, more AI features such as automated descriptions and dimensions, and a push for every listing to carry a tour. For owners and agents that raises the value of having spaces captured now rather than when a listing goes live.
Our advice
Keep your models organised under your own Matterport account, export floor plans and MatterPak files for anything you may need outside the platform, and treat the tour as one layer of a larger record that can include survey-grade scans and drone maps.
